Customers usually provide paper drawings (2D) to Polypack who in-turn design the moulds and first provide a trial lot for approval and after getting the final approval from the customer, the required volume of production is undertaken. The final volume per product is usually in the tune of 1 to 5 lakhs pieces per month. To achieve such large production volumes, Polypack has to make multi-cavity moulds. |
| With the stiff competition in the consumer goods industry,
the demands on packaging designs to be more attractive and compact have
been increasing. This further adds to the complexity of the mould and thus
the cost. The typical cost for the set of moulds for a product range from
Rs.5 to 15 lakhs and take about 6 to 8 months for completion.
On one of such products, Polypack had a doubt regarding certain features of the product design and to get the same verified had a discussion with the client. However the issue could not be resolved and after al lot of deliberations, it was decided to have a prototype made. Upon seeing the prototype models, the features in question were visualised better and this warranted a change in the design. Another set of prototypes was built after the design was modified. Thus, the investment in prototypes saved a lot of re-work and delay in the project. Polypack estimates a saving of Rs.2 to 3 lakhs in a total mould cost of Rs.10 lakhs and a saving of atleast 2 months out of 12-month production schedule. Besides, the saving on embarrassment of such mistakes and the hassles of going through the revisions was an added advantage. |
