Traditionally a prototype is made with the objective of verifying the form, fit and functional aspects of the part or an assembly. This allows the designer to be adequately confident of his design even before manufacturing costly tools and also regular production. Rapid prototyping technology essentially automates the fabrication of a complex part by producing it as a series of layers stacked on top of each other. Given a complete and correct definition of the part geometry, it is possible to completely automate the process of support structure design, generation of machine instructions and part fabrications on an RP machine. Protosys exhibits part by part the evolution of a graphic 3D CAD model on a STL format into ABS plastic model of an accuracy of + 0.005 inch/inch and possess about 60% of the strength of the original part. Protosys can also provide short run production of such parts in cast polyurethane materials. The additive processes used in RP ensures better material utilization as compared to the material removal process.
